Copaganda: Updated

06/11/2020

Our statement:

We are reposting the Copaganda post after reviewing feedback from many of our followers. We would like to cover a few updates in this new post in contrast with our previous one:

We used the terms "police" and "law enforcement" interchangeably at times, but the statistics are about law enforcement in general, which include entities like the DEA, ICE, etc.

The main source we used for our police statistics was a Huffington Post article published in 2017 citing 2013 statistics. We found that some of these statistics are untrue and outdated, and in our new post, we are using statistics from FBI reports in 2019 and 2018 (whichever had the most recent updates).

We previously included statistics relating to the protests in Hong Kong, thus implying a comparison between those protests and the Black Lives Matter movement, which was not our intention. The goals of each movement are very different, but we wanted to show how corporate media paints different narratives for different protests, according to their own agenda. While the protesters in Hong Kong received praise for their actions in US corporate media, Black Lives Matter protesters have been discredited despite an overwhelming percentage of BLM protests being peaceful. It is also important for us to acknowledge that while we reported on statistics that were available to us relating to the protests in Hong Kong, the Chinese government has a history of lying about data, and these figures are probably not an exception.

Our goal as an organization is to present information and educate people about topics that we find important. We are glad to have a community of followers who are able to give us constructive criticism; in fact, we encourage it. We believe that accountability and transparency are crucial. This is why we respond to all the DMs we receive and publish all of our sources on our website. Moving forward, we will make sure that we use updated statistics, and we will be much more responsible with our research to avoid this kind of mistake again.

Again, we appreciate everyone who reached out to us to point out the errors we made. We're high school and college students doing this in our spare time, and we're learning just as much as you are. As our bio says, we are committed to keeping our followers informed, so never hesitate to let us know if you spot a discrepancy.

Thanks for bearing with us,
The Left Northeast team :)
